The Polar Bear Plunge is a long standing tradition at East Carolina University. This event began when 35 attendees plunged into the frigid water at the grand opening of the Student Recreation Center on January 16th, 1997. For the 27th annual Polar Bear Plunge, the theme was playing cards. Taking inspiration from the classic look of bicycle playing cards, marketing materials and merchandise, which included a custom deck of polar bear playing cards, was created.
