AMPERSAND BOOK

Cover + Interior Spread

Each spring, the School of Art and Design at East Carolina University has the graphic design senior class design their MFA program book. This book showcases the students in the MFA program of all art disciplines offered there, and is sent out as advertising for the program.

When my senior class was tasked with designing the book, we separately developed our own cover designs that would then be reviewed and chosen by the dean of SoAD. Both of my cover designs explored identity. The first one focused more on individual identity though the handprint, as a symbol of the artist leaving a piece of themselves in the work that they do. The second cover design utilized fingerprints to represent the unique individual artistic identities that make up a tight-knit community of graduate students.

The interior of the book was entirely collaborative. The final product is a flexible grid and typography system that resulted from combining a wide range experiments conducted by everyone in the class. For my section of information to design, I had the artist biographies. Due to the nature of the biography pages being different content than the rest of the book, I had more freedom in the way I organized information. Using the type and grid system we created as a class, I organized the information in a way that was simple and allowed flexibility in the information displayed on the page.
